A Slice of Life
PART A:
Type in or click on the following URL:

- Scroll down
on the page until the Visible Human Viewer is displayed.
- Follow these steps to select a slice of the body:
- Select the gender (Male or Female) and data type (Photo) by clicking on the labeled button. Note that MRI and CT images are not yet available.
- Select a slice by clicking and dragging one of the cutting lines.
- Based on the speed of your Internet connection, select the image resolution (Low, Medium, or High) by clicking on the labeled button. Medium is fine for this purpose.
- Click on the button
labeled Coronal to highlight that section.
- Click on the Load Image button
to download a higher resolution image, displayed in a pop-up window.
- Record the number of the slice here:___________ (the slice number is listed on the viewer control panel)
- Once the image has finished loading in the pop-up window, you will need to follow these steps to get a printed copy of the slice.
- Click on the button
labeled Download. This will cause the slice to open up in a new browser window.
- You can print the image by clicking on File then scrolling down to Print. Release the mouse button to print the window. The image will most likely print on more than one page, which will need to be taped together to form the complete image. If possible, use a color printer.
OR
- Click on the button labeled Download. This will cause the slice to open up in a new browser window.
- Copy the image by clicking on the image (for a PC, click the and hold the right mouse button; for a MAC, click and hold the mouse button).
- A menu should pop up. Scroll down and select Copy (or Copy Image). Release the mouse button and the image will be copied to the clipboard.
- Open up a painting or drawing program and paste the copied image by clicking on Edit then scrolling down to Paste. The image should paste onto your document.
- Resize the image to fit on the page. Click on the image to highlight it. Little boxes should appear around it. If you move the cursor to a box, you can then click and drag the box to resize the image.
- You can print the image by clicking on File then scrolling down to Print. Release the mouse button to print the page. If possible, use a color printer.
Label the printed copy of the slice with your name and the slice number.
PART B:
- You will need to identify 10 organs that are visible in your slice of the body. Label each organ with its name and the system that it belongs to. In your own words, provide a brief description of each organ that you identify.
- Type in or click on the following URL:

- Use the diagrams and descriptions of the systems to identify the parts of the body that are visible on the slice.
- If you click on the button for a system, a diagram of the system appears on the screen.
- If you move the mouse over the diagram, little diamond shaped "Pick Points" will appear.
- If you move the mouse over a Pick Point, an magnifying glass will appear along with the name of the image.
- If you click on the name of the image, a text description will appear in the right hand frame.
- If you click on the magnifying glass, a new, more detailed image will appear.
- To return to the previous image, you will need to click on the Back button of your browser.
- Once you have identified, labeled and described 10 organs that are visible in your slice of the body, turn in this sheet along with your labeled body slice.
